Mardakan Quadrangular Castle

Mardakan Quadrangular Castle is one of the most impressive medieval defensive monuments on the Absheron Peninsula. Located in the historic village of Mardakan, the fortress reflects the architectural traditions of the Shirvan-Absheron school and played an important role in the region’s coastal defence system.

The castle was built during the reign of Shirvanshah Akhsitan I and was used for defence, observation and protection. Its massive limestone walls, fortified towers and impressive 22-metre-high central tower make it one of the most remarkable historical landmarks of Absheron.

Today, Mardakan Quadrangular Castle offers visitors an opportunity to explore Azerbaijan’s medieval architectural heritage and enjoy a glimpse into the defensive history of the Absheron Peninsula.
