Mardakan Round Castle – A Medieval Fortress of Absheron

Mardakan Round Castle, also known as the Small Mardakan Castle, is a medieval fortress located in the Mardakan settlement of Baku. Built in 1232, the castle is an important example of the Shirvan-Absheron architectural tradition.

The fortress consists of a powerful circular tower surrounded by defensive walls and towers. Its distinctive architecture, limestone construction and strategic location demonstrate the importance of Mardakan within the medieval defensive network of the Absheron Peninsula.

Visitors can explore the historic fortress and discover one of the region’s best-preserved examples of medieval defensive architecture.
