QOBUSTAN — Where History Speaks

Qobustan is one of the most unique destinations for visitors looking to discover Azerbaijan’s ancient history and rock art. Located approximately 60 kilometres from Baku, the Gobustan State Historical-Artistic Reserve is known for its thousands of years-old rock carvings, ancient settlement remains and archaeological monuments.

Visitors can explore more than 6,000 petroglyphs depicting hunting scenes, dances, animals, boats and everyday life of ancient people. Some of these rock carvings date back approximately 20,000 years. Another fascinating feature of the reserve is the Gaval Dash, a large resonant stone that produces musical-like sounds when struck with another stone.

Another remarkable historical site in Gobustan is a Roman inscription dating back to the 1st century. The inscription provides evidence of the presence of Roman soldiers in the area and represents one of the region’s notable historical traces.
